Hopefully Redskins will learn their lesson

Friday, January 9th, 2009

The Washington Redskins were in position half way through the regular season to get into the playoffs, but fell apart in the second half of the season.  Hopefully rookie head coach Jim Zorn has learned his lesson.

The cause of the downward spiral was not the play of the players, or injuries to the team.  The cause was a change in philosophy be head coch Jim Zorn.

Numbers do not lie as they are the indicators of what people like to do as we are creatures of habit.  Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Blog, via Pro Football Talk.com, wrote that the Redskins averaged a little over 33 runs per a game in the first half of the season, and in the second half averaged a little over 26 runs per a game.  That means for the passing game went from 29 passes per a game in the first half to almost 35 passes per a game in the second half.

What made Zorn, and the rest of the offensive coaching staff change their philosophy, is anyones guess.  What Redskins fans need to hope for is that the coaching staff has learne their lesson, and not change things when the team is winning.

The only time that there should be changes is when things are not working.

If Zorn sticks with passing it more than running the ball he will find himself out of a job.

Washington’s playoff hopes rests on a win this week

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

The Washington Redskins are on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs.  With the Baltimore Ravens on the slate this week the Redskins hopes rest on winning this game.

After this week the schedule gets much easier in games against the Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles, and the San Francisco 49ers.

The key to the game will be the Redskins running game against the Ravens run defense.  As both are top in the league.

So, who will rise, while the other will fall who knows.   However, the advantage does go to the Redskins, since the Ravens were gashed by the New York Giants running game.

There is one thing for sure, and that is the football world will be watching to see who wins.

Redskins not ready to contend

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

The Washington Redskins had high hopes coming into the 2008 season, so high that they even went out and traded for defensive end Jason Taylor.  However, that was a for not as the Pittsburgh Steelers crushed the Redskins on Monday night.

The Redskins needed to win if they want any shot at winning their division.  For the New York Giants are 7-1 and are two games up in the loss column as the Redskins are 6-3.

The schedule for the rest of the season for the Redskins does not get any easier.  Also, they play each division opponent one more time.

That means that even if they are going to contend for the wild card they are going to have to win two of the three of the divisional games.  Also, they face the Baltimore Ravens, which is a tough opponent, because of their defense, and the play of rookie quarterback Joe Flacco.

There is a bright light for the Redskins that being three of their opponents.  They face the Cincinnati Bengals, San Francisco 49ers, and the Seattle Seahawks, and all three are horrible this year.

So, the Redskins have a tough road ahead. However, that is part of being in the NFC East in the National Football League.

Is Washington making the right move

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Washington Redskins head coach Jim Zorn made a tought decision yesterday as he announced that long time starting right tackle Jon Jansen is being demoted to backup guard.  The question now is it the right move.

According to the Washington Post, the reason for making Stephon Heyer the starting right tackle for week one is not a complicated issue.

Simply, Jansen pass protection has slipped dramatically.  Also, Jansen has been unable to stay healthy.

Last year Jansen missed all of last year, except week one, to a broken leg.  Also, the team is switching to a West Coast offense, which requires utilizing more pass blocking techniques.

However, this is the National Football League, and in an article by ESPN’s John Clayton the best way to describe how the league is now is a quote from Arizona Cardinals running back Edgerrin James.  “It’s a speed game,'’ James said.

Everyone is faster than ten years ago.  A aging lineman who is losing his skills cannot survive at tackle, and must switch to guard, or else he is going to find himself benched, or on the streets as a unwanted free agent.

Redskins need to rethink approach to training camp

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

The Washington Redskins were the first team that opened training camp on July 20th.  Already that is showing to be a huge mistake.

The Redskins already lost two defensive players for the season, thus forcing them to trade for defensive end Jason Taylor.  Now, another defensive player suffered a major injury as starting defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery broke a bone in his right hand.

There was not time table set on Montgomery’s return.  Before he returns the swelling must first come down.  It is expected that he will be out at least ten days.

Head coach Jim Zorn is simply pushing them for so long, and hard, that there are going to be more major injuries still to come.

Zorn needs to start cancelling some practices if he is going to have a season.  If he does not, and players keep going down, then Zorn could even fired after one year.

Lawsuit against Redskins is ridiculous

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

For many years now Native American Indians have been challenging the names of teams at all levels, including the National Football League’s Washinton Redskins.  It is simply getting to the point of it being comical.

I have nothing against these people.   They are honorable people, and I even dated a Cherokee indian girl.

However, the lawsuit against the Redskins has pushed these type of law suits to the point that they are losing credibility.  For crying out loud the team has had the name the Washington Redskins for 75 years.

The first lawsuit against the Redskins was brought up in 1992.  That is nearly 60 years after the teams inaugural season.

So, why has a lawsuit been not brought up before then?

The answer is a two folded answer.

First, before 1988 indian tribes really did not have the money to bring it up.  Since, the late 1980’s Indian tribes have been using Settlement Claim Acts to buy land to use for casinos.  Thus, giving them a boat load of money.

Secondly, the NFL has become one of the biggest business entities in the US making over six billion a year.  The plaintiffs most likely have thought up that the lawsuit would bring bad plubicity, and thus they would most likely settle on something to make it go away.

If the plaintiffs win their case against the Redskins they would lose their trademark protection, and thus anyone could sell Redskins merchandise.

However, this is the NFL, and owners are not stupid.  If the Redskins lose the fight, then they will simply change their name, and apply for a new trademark.

In the end, if Native Americans keep pursuing this issue, then they will become the bully that they are trying to beat.

Washington’s Campbell wants to take next step

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

The Washington Redskins have not had a franchis quarterback in a long time.  It looks like that having one might soon become a reality

Redskins starting quarterback Jason Campbell said this after practicice last wednesday, “My first goal is always team success, and if I’m going to lead this team to the type of success we want, that I know we can have, then I’m going to have to put in all the time it takes. And if the team does well and reaches a high level, everyone is going to receive what they’re deserving of individually. I believe that.”

The question is can he put it all together for the regular season?  That is something that he has not been able to do so far.  In his rookie season he did not start a game.  In 2006 he finally started a game in week ten, and proceeded to start the rest. In 2007 he start the first 13 games, and then was injured.

This year he is going to have to perform on a consistent basis.  Last year he had 2,700 yards passing, 12 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.  That is just nothing more than average performance from a starter.

What will he have to accomplish? He will have to pass over 3,000 yards passing for the year, along with 20 touchdowns, and 10 intercpetions.  Also, Campbell will have to lead the Redskins to victory in some games.

With a completely new offense this year most likely it will be next year that Campbell will break through.

Redskins locked on to a wide receiver

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The Washington Redskins made a play for wide receiver Chad Johnson, and came up empty.  Now, they have their sites on a couple of wide receivers.

According to Pro Football Talk.com the Redskins visited wide receivers Malcom Kelly yesterday, and Jordy Nelson today.  In which round they take a wide receiver remains to be seen.

Kelly was thought of to be one of the top receivers in the draft, but a slow 40 yard dash time killed that.  So, as it now stands Kelly is a possibility for the Redskins, and if he is there he will most likely be their pick.  If not then it looks like Nelson is the second round backup plan for the Redskins.

So, who would be the first round pick if Kelly is not there?  That looks like it will be Phillip Merling, because he also worked out for the Redskins yesterday.

The real question is Kelly worth selecting at number 21 in the first round.  Considering how much talent he has yes.  The flip side of the coin is will he be another Terrell Owens, or Chad Johnson.  That remains to be seen, but his griping after his Pro Day workout did not help at all.

Will they get either wide receiver remains to be seen.

Redskins have to plan for future now

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

The Washingtong Redskins did something that shocked the football world, and that being not spend very much money on free agents.  With that being said this years draft is crucial for the future of their franchise.

The draft is a very important one for the Washington Redskins.  For it will lay the foundation of the teams success in the future to come, especially on offense.

On offense they have two glaring needs a tall playmaking receiver, and future replacements for their offensive line.  The Redskins do have Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El, but both are only 5′10 tall.  On the offensive line no starter is under the age of 30 years old, plus two key backup linemen are over 30.

Luckily, they do not have to do it overnite, and can do it over the course of several years.  However, this drat is billed as a very deep draft when it comes to the tackle position.  So, getting at least one tackle, and one guard will be the best thing to do.  Also, center Casey Rabach is 30, so they have a few years to go to worry about that.

On the defensive side of the ball they need better players on the defense line.  They were in the top five against defending the run, however, their pass defense was not that good at all.  Both starting defensive tackles combined for only three sacks, and that is not going to get it done.  You need five to ten for the position to be successful.

Also, cornerback, and of course stront safety, are the rest of the needs.  I do not have to tell you why strong safety is a need.  If I do then you must have been living under a rock for the past year.  Cornerback wise they are in need of a nickle.

If the Redskins are going to get back to the Super Bowl it will finally be due to the draft, and not owner Dan Snyder’s money.
