The New York Giants took wide receiver Mario Manningham in the third round as he slipped into the third round of the 2008 National Football League Draft.
After two games Manningham is starting to look like the Super Mario of the NFL.
Manningham on Sunday Night Football caught 10 passes for 150 yards with one touchdown.
That is pretty good considering that Manningham is the third wide receiver on the Giants.
The one question for the Giants going into 2009 was do they have an answer to wide receiver Plaxico Burress who was cut by the team back in April.
With the Giants having two solid receivers in Manningham and Steve Smith the Giants have a solid one two punch.
With tight end Kevin Boss, rookie rookie wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, and one of the best running games in the NFL the Giants are just absolutely stacked on offense.
In the end the Giants are simply one of the teams to beat in the NFC Conference.
With Steve Spagnuolo to take the Saint Louis Rams head coaching job the New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin elevated linebackers coach Bill Sheridan to defensive coordiantor.
Already Sheridan has most likely learned a valuable lesson.
According to reports, Sheridan Monday morning criticized defensive end Osi Umenyiora for a mistake that he made in the Giants week three preseason game.
That upset Umenyiora as he thought that contradicted a statement that he made earlier on the topic.
There is one rule when dealing with superstars and that is do not tick them off as they can hold your team hostage.
That means that when you talk to a player you have to learn what you can say and what you cannot.
The one thing that you can never do is straight out criticize a superstar for his play as thy are always tough on themselves as that is what it usually takes to get there.
The last thing they want to hear from their coaches humiliating talk like a drill seargant.
Fortunately, for the team Umenyiora did come back to the facilities to talk to Sheridan and Coughlin about it.
In the end Sheridan better tread lightly as if he doesn’t learn from this incident it will happen again and that time it will not blow over in a day.
The New York Giants wet in a different direction offensively as they released wide receiver Plaxico Burress and did not resign fellow wide receiver Amani Toomer.
That means the Giants passing game has a totally different look as the number one wide receiver is Steve Smith, while Dmenik Hixon and rookie Hakeem Nicks will battle it out for the number two spot.
Smith is the most talented of the bunch as last year he caught 57 passes for 574 yards receiing with one touchdown mostly as the number three receiver the last two years.
Hixon showed some promise after he came on for Burress after he shot himself in the leg as he caught 30 passes for376 yards receiving with one touchdown.
Nicks is the wild card of the three as he is unknown commodity as a he was drafted in the first round of this past April’s National Football League Draft.
Most wide receivers do not hit their stride until their third season as there are a lot of thing that a wide receiver must learn.
That means Smith and Hixon will be the starters with Hixon being the third wide receiver.
In the end it will be Nicks’s performance that will make or break the Giants offense.
The New York Giants were one of the best teams in the National Football League during the regular season as they compiled 12-4 record, but that all went out the window when wide receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself accidently with an unregistered gun. That leaves many Giants fans going into next year wondering who will step up.
In addition to the release of Burress by the team the team did not resign long time starting wide receiver Amani Toomer whose best years has passed him by as he will be 35 years old this September.
That leaves Steve Smith as the top wide receiver on the team, which he deserves a shot at as he compiled 57 catches for 574 yards with one touchdown as the number three receiver on the team.
After Burress hurt himself the Giants replaced him with wide receiver Domenik Hixon who caught 22 passes for 294 yards receiving with one touchdown in five games.
Luckily the team also has a solid tight end in Kevin Boss who caught 33 passes for 384 yards receiving with six touchdowns.
Also, the Giants had the best running game in football last year led by running back Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw.
In case Hixon doesn’t prove to be an adequate starter the team drafted wide receiver Hakeem Nicks in the first round of this past April’s NFL Draft and Mario Manningham in 2008’s Draft.
Fortunately, Hixon will get a chance to prove to be a good starter as it takes wide receivers three years to develop into stars.
In the end the Giants should be fine as long as the running game still is going strong.
The New York Giants were the team to beat in the NFC during the regular season. However, injuries derailed their season, thus leaving people wondering can they be healthy next year.
It started even before the regular season as defensive end Osi Umenyiora tore a lateral meniscus in his left knee ending his season before it even started.
The injury bug only got worst for the team as by the end of the season all four of thier starters suffered injuries and only this week has it been revealed how hard it hit.
Starting defensive tackles Barry Cofield and Fred Robbins have reportedly had microfracture surgery to repair holes in the cartilage of thier knees.
The to make this worst for the team during the regular season wide receiver Plaxico Burres shot himself in the leg with a unregistered gun that he was carrying. That of course ended his season as well.
The Giants went into free agency and signed defensive tackles Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty to solidify their defensive tackle position in case Robbins and Cofield are not ready to go.
The fact of the matter is that the best team with the least amount of injuries to their starters is usually the team that wins the Superbowl.
With the Giants being in one of the toughest division in the National Football League in the NFC East the Giants have to find a way to stay healthy.
If they don’t then it will be another early exit in the playoffs for them.
The New York Giants this offseason made two big splashes in signing defensive lineman Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard. The additions has already one player running his mouth, which now needs to be backed up.
The Giants opened their offseason program Monday, according to the New York Daily News defensive end Justin Tuck said, “The players here and the coaching staff. The experience, we have been there and done it. We know what it takes to get there. No one can deny that the team we had last year was headed that way until we got some injuries here and there along with distractions. On paper I think the team to beat is definitely us.”
It is common knowledge that players trash talk on the field. That sometimes carries off the field in this case.
The problem is that the Giants number one wide receiver Plaxico Burress is facing up to three years in jail for his incident last year. That would leave a huge void on the offense.
The fact of the matter is that the Giants lost last year, because they could not pass the ball without Burress.
If they do not find a replacement, or someone on the team steps up, the Giants will find themselves again exiting early from the playoffs again.
