It is starting to look like the Carolina Panthers will take a quarterback first overall come April’s National Football League Draft.
With the decision being between quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton, the Panthers would be better off with Newton right now.
Newton is a little bit more raw then Gabbert and his mechanics aren’t as good. That would mean a year on the bench would serve him well and with the Panthers having selected quarterback Jimmy Clausen in the second round last year they can get a thorough look at him while developing Newton.
Also, the Panthers strength on offense is their running game with running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. With Newton’s athletic ability the Panthers would be able to run some option plays.
Obviously, that doesn’t mean the Panthers can just forget about developing the passing game, because a quarterback won’t last long being more of a runner. The reason being defenses love to hit a starting quarterback and running the option exposes the quarterback to more hits.
However, the Panthers don’t have a second wide receiver opposite Steve Smith, which means that the option would give them a chance to win right now. Once they do get one they can make that shift over
In the end, the Panthers have a big decision to make and they better get it right, because if they don’t they are screwed for the next decade.
