Bills just need to resign their own

Standard

Even though free agency in the National Football League is on hold that doesn’t mean we can’t look at what areas they could improve on via free agency.

After looking at all the factors the Bills best course of action is just resigning their own.

On offense the only person that they will have to resign is backup quarterback Brian Brohm, but that may be a moot point if the Bills take a quarterback with the third overall pick come April’s National Football League Draft as many experts are predicting.

So. the main point of emphasis is defense, especially the defensive backs. Fortunately, one of the situations have been solved as the Bills resigned safety George Wilson to a new contract as both he and Donte Whinter’s contracts were set to expire at the start of the new league year. That leaves the Bills to have to address the cornerback position.

The Bills will have two free agent cornerbacks in Ashton Youboty and Drayton Florence. Florence will most likely be impossible to resign as cornerbacks are in high demand and with the Bills being one of the better pass coverage units in the NFL recently. As for Youboty the Bills should be able to resign him as his contract demand won’t be as high.

The other person they need to get resigned is middle lineback Paul Posluszny as he has been a key contributor to the team and looks to have entered his prime as he was third in the NFL in tackles last year.

That means outside of the Bills resigning their own they really don’t have to go out in free agency and sign someone unless they are an impact player.

In the end, when it comes to the NFL it has and always will be about the Draft.

Newton would be the better pick

Standard

It is starting to look like the Carolina Panthers will take a quarterback first overall come April’s National Football League Draft.

With the decision being between quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton, the Panthers would be better off with Newton right now.

Newton is a little bit more raw then Gabbert and his mechanics aren’t as good. That would mean a year on the bench would serve him well and with the Panthers having selected quarterback Jimmy Clausen in the second round last year they can get a thorough look at him while developing Newton.

Also, the Panthers strength on offense is their running game with running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. With Newton’s athletic ability the Panthers would be able to run some option plays.

Obviously, that doesn’t mean the Panthers can just forget about developing the passing game, because a quarterback won’t last long being more of a runner. The reason being defenses love to hit a starting quarterback and running the option exposes the quarterback to more hits.

However, the Panthers don’t have a second wide receiver opposite Steve Smith, which means that the option would give them a chance to win right now. Once they do get one they can make that shift over

In the end, the Panthers have a big decision to make and they better get it right, because if they don’t they are screwed for the next decade.
