The 49ers are Foolish

The Philadelphia Eagles for the past several year have been experiencing problems with player’s contracts.  Unfortunately, the San Francisco 49ers are following that same path.

The Eagles are having problems, because several years ago they signed young players to very long term contracts.

Now, these players are realizing that this was a mistake as their contract does not even come close to reflecting the current market.

The 49ers signed last week offensive tackle Joe Staley to a contract extension.  Now Staley is under contract for the next nine years.

The same thing happened to Eagles offensive tackle Jason Peters when he was with the Buffalo Bills.

Peters prior to the 2006 season signed a contract extension through 2010 as a right offensive tackle.

Then in the middle of the 2006 season Peters was switched from right tackle to left tackle and went on to make the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2008,

When Peters made the Pro Bowl his contract became obsolete, which prompted him to ask for a new contract, which fell on deaf ears in the Bills organization.

Ultimately, the Bills went on to trade Peters earlier this offseason as they felt he was not worth the money that he was asking for, thus trading him to the Eagles.

There are many examples of this, and if there are not provisions of the allowment of adjusting the contractat, or voiding it, then the 49ers will have the same kind of head aches.
