Peters getting a bum rap in Saint Louis

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Buffalo Bills tackle Jason Peters is off to a slow start this season.  However, people are wrongly blaming Peters for a sack by by Chris Long.

Even Buffalo New’s Allen Wilson messed this up.  The problem being that everyone is forgetting on the play the Marshawn Lynch slipped when he went to help block Long.

However, it would have not mattered, because the defense had a twist stunt on the play.  Unless quarterback Trent Edwards slided up, and released it quickly, he still would have gotten sacked.

A twist stunt is that the defensive lineman will cross his blocker’s face to rush inside. Then a linebacker would go around the defensive lineman to rush outside.

To combat this type of stunt players need to be on the same page.  That is not the case with Lynch going for Long.

As in the book “Sundday Morning Quarterback” By Phil Simms with Vic Varucci, people need to looks past the announcers, because they are usually wrong, and need to analyze the player more analytically afterwards.

As the saying goes do not judge a book by its cover.

A tough decision to make

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost some key players for the season in running back Rashard Mendenhall and guard Kendall Simmons.  Now, the Steelers face the decision of how to compensate for their losses.

The replacement of Rashard Mendenhall will be the easy part.  That is due the availability of free agent running backs Saun Alexander and Cedric Benson.  Neither of the two have yet to sign with a team.

The hard part is the replacing of Simmons.  The Steelers were already hard pressed for quality lineman.  Now, there are going to be desperate, as the quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is on pace to be sacked 60 times this season.

At that rate the only place the Steelers will be going is the golf course at the end of the season.  The reason is the same as in the Saint Louis Rams situation.

Quarterbacks that get hit a lot eventually get ancy in the pocket.  When that starts to happen the ball is released earlier than normal, thus the pass is usually incomplete, or intercepted.  That is exactly the problem with Rams quarterback Marc Bulger, who was benched this past week for back up Trent Green.

Unless the solution for the Steelers is ihouse, then it is going to be a long year for the Steelers.

A wake up call to NFL players

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Jacksonville Jaguars tackle Richard Collier is lucky to even be alive as he was shot 14 times earlier this month.  Hopefully, the senseless violence will be a wakeup call to National Football League players.

It has been a couple of years since Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot to death outside a night club celebrating New Years.  All of those memories have come flooding back to the minds of everyone.

There is no question about it NFL players are targets if they visit clubs.  The reason is for several different things.

First, the raining of cash by NFL players Javon Walker, and Adam “Pacman” Jones, sent a message to criminals that NFL players are loaded when they go to clubs looking to spen big time money.

Secondly, their easy targets.  They are told be the NFL office not to carry guns.  A lot of the feel invincible.  Finally, their senses are way off, because the have been drinking.  That means they do not see trouble coming, until it is to late that is.

So, what is the solution to this?  Simple, that is ban players for night clubs all together.

The proof is in Pro Football Talk.com turd watch.  What drug do most of the arrests stem from on the site?  Alcohol, because players love to party.

They love to party, because it feeds their ego.  They are the big shot in the room, and that status allows them to get in the sack easier with women.

Its obvious that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is going to have to step in on this one.  After all if the players cannot save themselves, then someone has to do it before there is another incident like Colliers and Williams.

Bills show up at halftime again

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

The Buffalo Bills have improved their record to 4-0, with a win over the Saint Louis Rams defeating them 31-14.  You would have not thought that was possible in the first half.

The Bills in the first half was just simply awful on defense, and offense.  Both teams were dominated in the first half.

Then just like the previous two weeks the Bills came to play.  Showing who the real team is by scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Offensively, Edwards was 15-25 throwing 197 yards with one touchdown and one interception.  Edwards stats would be better if not for persistent deep fade routes being called by offensive coordinator Turk Schonert.

Schonert’s play calling in the first half was very questionable.  The offensive line was dominated by the Rams defensive line, especially the Bills Langston Walker who gave up four sacks in one half.

If Schonert simply called more short passing plays, then the defense would have most likely not given up so many rushing yards to Steven Jackson.

Many people will perceive that adjustments were made at halftime.  That is just a myth.

What happened is that the coaches ripped the players a new one.  Then they players woke up out of their shells, and came to play.

Still the Bills have not put a four quarter game together.  The four games that they have played were against inferior teams.

So, watch out AFC the Bills are the team to beat.

Payton gets the short end of the stick

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton criticized the officials who officiated last weeks Denver Broncos win over the Saints, and thus was fined.  However recently two other prominent National Football League front office people got off with nothing after they did the same thing.

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones blasted referee Ed Hoculi after he badly screwed up a call in a game between the Chargers and the Broncos that costed the Chargers the game.

After they gave their opinion the league did nothing.  However, NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell had enough of the criticizing of the officials, and slammed the door on any negative comments about them what so ever.  If a head coach, or any front office personell, that person would be fined.

Enough is enough already with babying these officials.  Both Hoculi, and the other crew got what they deserved.  Both calls were blantely obvious, and not even close to being judgemental.

When a referee blows a call that bad he should be called out on it.  Everyone else in the NFL is, but the referees are not.

Hey here is a suggestion make them fulltime, and study film, and prepare for games just like any other NFL player.  Then there will be very little problems.

Bills will come prepared

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Many people out there think that this is a easy game for the Bills, and some think it is a trap game.  There is one thing for certain, and that is they will come prepared.

It will most likely be a tough contest for the Bills, especially the defense.  The Saint Louis Rams just have changed quarterbacks, and most people are forgetting one thing.

When Saunders was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Cheifs his starting quarterback was Trent Green, who replaces Rams starter Marc Bulger this week.

The Rams offense could be dangerous, especially if they used their tight end right.

Randy McMichael is their starting tight end.  He is a very good one, and has burned the Bills before, when he was a Miami Dolphin.  So, the defense definately needs to keep him in check.

The main problem with the offense is that the line stinks.  It gave up eleven sacks in the first three games of the regular season.  Also, in an interview Rams starting running back Steven Jackson stated that many members of the team are ticked off at Linehan for pulling Bulger out of the starting lineup.

With the Rams starting offensive line in shambles, along with the team about to turn on their head coach in a second.  The Bills have a really good chance of going 4-0 this week.

Rice’s decision could come to haunt him

Friday, September 26th, 2008

In the world of the National Football League trash talking is everywhere.  However, Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has taken it too far.

Rice’s college teammate was Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall.  The two engaged in a little trash talk, as Mendenhall stated in a text message that he was going to have a big game against the Ravens defense in week four’s Monday Night Football game.

For a former teammate, and most likely now former friend, to turn around, and blab to everyone else is simply just plain bull.  Mendenhall most likely would have never sent the message if he knew Rice was going to share it with everyone.

In football there is a thing called trust.  It is not given at will it is simply earned.  For Rice to turn around and stab a so called friend in the back should even wave red flags to teammates.

What do you think is going to happen if another Raven, and Rice, got into trouble?  Rice would go stool pigeon, and rat out the player.

The fact is that there are things that you do not go blabbing around.  One of them is something a friend says directly to you.

If Mendenhall wanted the whole Raven squad to know what he said he would of said it in a interview with the media.

Mark my words this will come to bite Rice in the ass some day.  Most likely not this week, but sometime down the line.

Key time coming for Cassel

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

New England Patriot’s quarterback Matt Cassel has never started a game before Tom Brady was injured.  Now, with his third start coming soon a key period of time is coming for him.

The third game is when teams start figuring out quarterbacks.  The reason is that teams have a bunch of game film, and can figure out what his tendancies are.

Cassel is not a rookie as he is now in his fourth year in the league.  So, his studying habits, and knowledge of the Patriots offense is far more advanced than what normal a normal rookie would know.

Simply, if Cassel struggles in games it could even cost him his career as a backup in the league.  After all who wants a backup that cannot step in, and win games.

Falcons best of the worst

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

The Atlanta Falcons have won two games already, which has many Falcon fans beaming.  However, the wins were only against two of the worst teams in the league.

The Falcons beat up the Detroit Lions, and the Kansas City Cheifs.  Both teams are the worst teams in the league as their quarterback positions are a disaster.

Yes, quarterback Matt Ryan has looked decent in those games.  Leaving many happy about the future ahead for Ryan.

What really matters is how Ryan performs against top teams.   That does not bode well for Ryan’s future as he was horrendous in a performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In that game Ryan completed 13 of 33 passes for 158 yards, and two interceptions in a 24-9 loss.  Most likely half of Ryan’s passing yards came in garbage time.

This week is a huge test for the Falcons, and thier future.  For bad performances against the Panthers could break the confidence of these young players to the point of no return.

If you do not beleive me go ask Philadelphia Eagles tackle Winston Justice.  Who last year in a start against the New York Giants got beaten up like a little rag doll by Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora.

Could McNabbs days be numbered

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is off to a good start this season with five touchdowns, one interception, and over 800 yards passing this year.  However, he is hurt again, and only one can only start to wonder when the howls of replacing him within the organization start.

It is the one problem with Donovan McNabb, and that is he cannot stay healthy enough anymore to play a full season.  With all the injuries it is only a matter of time the 31 year old quarterback starts seeing his play decline.

The  game has changed in the early 90’s a starting quarterback could go down, and the team would not miss a beat, because it had a quality back up on the team that could pickup where the starter left off.  That is not the case anymore with free agency, as any decent looking young backup is swooped up by a quarterback hungry team.

Another statistic that is against McNabb is the fact that he has not thrown over 20 touchdowns in four years.  In a West Coast style offense that is not good.

The Eagles are in a tough division right now.  The top team in the league is the Dallas Cowboys.  The reigning Superbowl Champs are the New York Giants.  Also, Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell is starting to look real good.

Simply, the Eagles cannot afford to give McNabb anymore chances.  If he cannot stay healthy, and lead them to the playoffs, then it is not worth while to keep him around.

This could be the last year we see McNabb as the Eagles starting quarterback.
